Unit 5- Introducing Music Performance: Learning Aim: A

Unit 5- Introducing Music Performance

Basic skills audit
Before year 10 I have been going to piano lessons since the age of 9. I could do c, d, e, f, g on the piano. I was on prep test and I had to practice some of the music from the prep test book. I took a prep test exam board. I passed the prep test. At this time my rhythm and timing was not good because I couldn’t count beat and sometimes went too fast. My independent practice was not very good because I didn’t use to practise a lot. Then sometimes I didn’t listen to instruction /direction to my teacher because some of the time I went fast and some of time when she ask me to slow down I didn’t slow I just keep going without listening.

Target: To work on my tempo. I will work on improving my performance by practising my piano scales using warm up exercises to build up my hand muscles and muscle memory. To develop my timing skills by using my feet to keep in time.

Long term I want to be able to play a wider range of styles of music confidently and to good standard. To do this I will continue to learn how to read the music. I will listen to different styles of music not just musicals. I will structure my practise to help me achieve to a better level.

10-9-13
At the end of the year I want to achieve a distinction. Also I would like to get to a higher level . Also I want to achieve getting good result in my test. I am going to work hard, keep practising my piece, to remember where the notes are and revise hard.

At MWS Music I practise a piece called Jogalong and I showed it to my teacher Miss Harris and she said I am getting better. In that lesson I learned how to play the piece fast.

Target: To practise the tempo, rhythm and timing for Jogalong. To will do this by watching and learning what Miss Harris doing on the piano.

Week beginning 9 Sep 2013
Today in MWS Music I learned Jogalong on the piano. I learnt how to play the piece at the correct tempo. I made mistakes but I kept going. I showed the piece to Miss Harris my Music teacher then she said that I did much better but she told me to work on the last two phrases of the piece Jogalong on the piano. I felt more confident then I tried the Jogalong on the piano without the music and I did it but I made some mistakes. I felt that I had improved.

I learnt how to keep it smooth and how to stay in rhythm.

After school I do extra Piano lesson in Bushy. I go to someone house who teach me how to play the piano and my teacher is called Theresa. I have done my prep test and now I already started Grade 1. I learned a new piece called Whirlybird and she played it. I then played it and she said Good Try.
Every day I practise half and hour on Jogalong it was hard not to play to right tempo and I because I practise regular I can feel that I have improved.

Target: To practise more on phrase. To do this by practising the phrase until I know it well.

Week beginning 16 Sep 2013

In MWS Music lesson I practise and practise a lot on my Jogalong. Then Miss Harris recorded my Jogalong. I practise my grade 1 music piece but I had the wrong book. I had the 2012 to 2013 but I needed 2013 to 2014. I said to Mrs Harris that I will bring it in tomorrow and she will play all the piece. I will pick my favourite one and practise that piece that I chosen . I was happy when Miss Harris recorded my Jogalong because I felt that I didn't made mistakes. I was happy it was over and done. I feel good that I have increased my learning repertoire.

Review
I was happy that I didn't make any mistakes. The techniques I used was rhythm and timing counting the beats. I was confident that I use these well. My interpretation for my piece was accurate.

On Tuesday in MWS Music lesson I brought in my grade 1 2013-2014 book. Miss Harris played all the pieces and I had to pick my favourite one. I picked Fugue, Na todce and March. The reason I picked them because I liked the dynamic.

On Wednesday after school I went to Theresa house I said to my piano teacher why I picked the piece from grade 1 and the reason why. I practise the Fugue all week for half hour and the tricky bit was getting the tempo right. I tried hard to focus on getting it better.

Target: To focus and practise to get the tempo right for the music. To do this by focus more hard and the tempo.

Week beginning 23 Sep 2013

On Monday in the lesson I went onto my blog and corrected my spelling mistake. Miss Harris showed me how to get my recording music from sound cloud onto my blog.

On Tuesday in the lesson I practise the Fugue piece only with my right hand on the first line of music. I was alright at the start I had to go quick then I had to slow down. Miss Harris showed me how to do it using my right hand for the first phrase so I could practise a few times by playing that phrase over and over again. Then showed it to Miss Harris and she showed me how to do it for the left hand on the first line of the music. Then I practise it a few times. I then showed it to Miss Harris who said I did it very well.

On Wednesday in the lesson I kept practising my Fugue piece with the right hand first line of the music. Miss Harris said' Why don't we use my iPad mini to record my right hand and then the left hand playing the Fugue on the first line. Then we recorded one with my right hand, then the left hand. This reminds me how to play it using the right expression, dynamics and phrasing.

After school I go to Bushy to my music teacher house who teach me how to play a piano. My Music teacher is  called Theresa and she showed me where is the start of the positions of the Fugue music piece.

I practise the Fugue during the week for half hour and the tricky bit was that I went too fast throughout the music piece.

TARGET: to keep the rhythm / and play true to the notes of the music. I will do this by watching the ipad that Miss Harris recorded for me, and to use foot tapping to help me keep the rhythm and time.

Week beginning 30 Sep

On Tuesday at Knightsfield I didn't go to MWS Music lesson because they had inset day. At Knightsfield I practice my Fugue on the piano. I did the right hand phrase all the way through. Also Mr Bysouth who is a music teacher who teach year 7, 8, 9 at Knightsfield. He helped me how to stay in rhythm and he played the left hand phrase and I played the right hand phrase on the first line of the music. I did alright but I need to practise how to stay in rhythm, timing and counting the beats per minutes and accurate. My teacher assistant Miss Ryan wrote in my notebook to write to my after school piano teacher want I did in the lesson and saying that I spent sometime working on the right hand phrase movements.

On Wednesday MWS Music lesson I practise the Fugue on the piano. I did the right hand phrase all the way through on the first line of the music piece. I tried to do the right hand phrase and the left hand phrase together. I manged to do it and then I showed it to Miss Harris the right hand phrase all the way through the Fugue piece of music. She said I did well and she showed me how to do the right hand phrase and the left hand phrase together. Then I  recorded a video on my Ipad mini when she played the right hand and the left hand together on the first line because so that I remember how to do it. Miss Harris wrote in my notebook that I practiced my Fugue and that I learnt to play two hands together bars 1-7 and that I need to practise that phrase.

After school I went to Theresa house for extra piano lesson. My teacher Theresa helped me how to do right hand phrase and left hand phrase together on fugue piece. The tempo is that I went slow all the way through and I went a bit fast. Theresa said that I need to think about the style of the music which I did.  I went in a slower tempo pace . It was alright a bit tricky. Then after that I played the Na todce to my teacher Theresa but only the right hand phrase. My teacher Theresa said that I did very well. Theresa wrote in my notebook that I managed to put it all together with a few prompts. Also that I tend to start off to fast and that she is trying to encourage me to go in a slower tempo pace. I practise the Fugue during the week for half hour and the good bit was I kept in rhythm and I improved it by going a slower tempo.

Target Action - I used foot tapping to help me keep the rhythm, beat and time. I need to practsie my piano exercises to help me to acheive this.

Week beginning 7 Oct 2013

On Monday in the lesson I went on the computer and went onto my blog. Then Miss Harris told me to write a review for my Jogalong piece. Then she told me to read my writing and check spelling also mistake.

On the Tuesday in the Music lesson I practise my Fugue. On the first phrase I did both hand and I kept practising thinking about the beats per minutes while I was playing the piece. Then I showed to Miss Harris and she said ''well done''. Then on the second phrase I did the right hand. I kept practising. Afte that I only did the left hand phrase on the second phrase. Miss Harris showed me and then I tried to copy the same. She said ''good try". Practise a bit on that so then I kept practising the phrase that I need to practise on. Miss Harris wrote in my notebook to say what we did today also that I need to carry on with practising the phrase.

On Wednesday in the music lesson I practised my fugue. I didn't bring in my iPad because I thought I would know the phrase very well. I should have brought my IPad because it had my left hand and my right hand for the first and second line to practise. I found it hard to keep in rhythm.I found it hard to keep in tempo.

After school I went to my piano teacher, Theresa, house for an extra piano lesson. I showed Theresa the first line phrase of the music piece. ThenI did my right hand and left hand together quite fast. Theresa wrote in my notebook that she was impressed with how well the first phrase has gone together and that it is important to match the tempo so the piece is the same. It means slowing down the easier bits and start practising the tricky bits first. I practised Fugue for half an hour every day.

TARGET : To slow down the tempo by keeping to the rhythm and beats of the music. I will try to improve this by using my feet to tap the beats of the music. This is because a metronome is not easy for me to hear and learn by.

Week beginning 14 Oct 2013

On the Tuesday in the lesson I practised Fugue. I showed it to Miss Harris the second phrase with both hand. Miss Harris said do the right hand phrase first and play it until you know it. Then play the left hand phrase until you know it. Then I went on to practise the right hand phrase on the second phrase for a few times. Then I practise left hand on the second phrase for a few times. After that I showed it to Miss Harris the right hand first and the second hand on the second phrase and Miss Harris said I did good. I played the right hand and Miss Harris played the left hand I did some mistake but I played the left hand and Miss Harris played the right hand and I played the left hand but I did some mistake. Then Miss Harris said try do the second phrase with both hand together. I did it for a first time but the tempo I use was to go slower, tried second time. It was to difficult for me to do the second phrase with both hand together but I tried hard. The techniques I used was rhythm and timing and I felt confident. I tried very hard in the lesson.

On Wednesday after school I went home I practised for 20 minutes trying to do hand together on the second phrase. I practise the Fugue every day for half and hour.

TARGET: To practsie playing the second pharse with both hands and try not to make mistakes. To do this by practise the second phrase over again and over again till I know it well.

Week beginning 21 Oct 2013

On Monday at MWS Music lesson Miss Harris told me to read my blog and check my sentence to make sure it make sense after that she told me to add new vocabulary words from my booklet. Later on she told me to write a replay to say that I read the comments and I check the sentence, added new vocabulary words from my booklet.

On Tuesday in the music lesson I kept practising my Fugue I did both hands all the way through. I will feeling happy that I tried. I also made some mistake. After that I went back to the beginning and on the fist line of the music piece I did both hands. On the second line of the music piece I did the first hand and then the second hand. On the third line of the music piece I did both hands.

On Wednesday in music lesson I practise my Fugue. I went all the way through the piece. On the second line of the music piece I did the right hand then the left hand.  Then Miss Montague told me to go on the internet to find different jobs in the music industry and find about what they do. After school I went to my extra piano lesson. I showed Theresa both hands together on the first phrase. Then she said do the right hand first slower and then the left hand slower. She wrote in my notebook good try don't rush through the piece. Watch out for bar 11 that's the bar that's causing trouble. Right hands stays and the the thumb just stretches. I practise the Fugue for half hour.

Target: To tap the beats out with my feet and practise the tempo. To do this by using my feet to help em to count the beats and practise the tempo.

Week beginning 28 october

On Monday t home I practise Fugue music piece for 50 minutes. I went fast throughout the piece on the second line of the music piece I did the right hand then the left hand slower then I went fast. Then on the fourth line of the music piece I did the right hand and then the left hand slower then I went fast. After that I went throughout the piece. I keept practising it during the week with slower temop, couting the beats and  I thought about my expression and use of dynamics.

Week beginning 4 Nov 2013

On Tuesday in MWS Music lesson I practise the fugue on the piano. I practise all the way through twice and I showed it to Miss Harris and she said that I did very well. On the second phrase of the music piece I went too low then Miss Harris showed me and then told me to practice and not to go too low on the keyboard.

On the Wednesday in MWS Music lesson I practise my Fugue and then I showed it to Miss Harris she said that I went too low on the second phrase of the music piece then she recorded my first draft of the fugue music piece but I am still going to practise the Fugue piece till I get it perfect and improved.

Review
I am happy that I recored fugue draft. My tempo was fast. The technique I use was rhythm and timing and counting the beat and I was happy that used these well. My interpretation for my piece was not really accurate.

After school I did extra piano lesson practising the Fugue. I went all the way throughout the piece and my piano teacher Theresa said that I went too low on the second phrasde of the music piece. Then she showed me how to it that i don't go too low and then I did it and she said that I did it well and that to go slower to get it right. She wrote in my note book that I did well with my Fugue. The fist time throughout did go a bit too low but that I and her practised the second phrase throughout and slower which had helped me with the accurate of the notes. Remember going into a bar 11 that the right hand is close ( G sharp !) I practise the Fugue every day for half hour and the tricky bit was on the second phrase that I went too fast and it was difficult but I went slower. The good bit was I kept in time and I felt more confident playing the piece and Thersea said that my performance was good.

Target: To not go too low and get the right tempo for the music. To do this by to think if I am going low on the piano keyboard and improve it.

I kept practise over and over. Then I showed it to my teacher assistant Ms Montague.she said that I was very good and that I made progress. She was happy and told me to play the second hand with the video. I practised once more.

After school I went to extra piano lesson. I showed Theresa my Fugue music piece all the way through. She said that I did very good and that I made progress. I played it twice all the way through without going low on the keyborad on the second phrase. Then I showed it to Theresa my Na Todce only with my right hand. Then she showed my how to do it with both hand it was a bit hard but I went all the way through slower. She wrote in my notebook saying that I did well in Fugue and this is coming on really well. That she was proud of me and all the hard work I did. Try not to rush where the left hand comes in on the top line or the second phrase. I practise the Fugue every day for half hour the tricky bit was not to go too fast and the good bit was that I went fast and slower when it told me on the the music piece and tryed to be accurate in pitch.

Target: To go in a slower and practise not to go low on Fugue. To do this by not going fast on the piano keyboard.

Week beginning 18th Nov 2013

On Tuesday I practise Fugue I showed it to Miss Harris then she said that I did very well but  I kept missing out notes. So I kept practising. Then later on I showed it to Miss Harris from the beginning she told me to stop and start again because I went too fast and that I didn't kept in beat per mintues so she told me to start again.

On Monday in Music lesson I went onto my blog and update my blog. I had to do my blog off what I did in the Music lesson last week and I research music industry.

Review
I was happy and proud that I had improved a lot and the technique I used was exptession and dynamics and counting the beat per mintues. I was happy and confident that I used it very well and my interpretation of my music piece was accurate.

On Tuesday. Then I showed it to Miss Harris my Fugue piece of music and she said that I did very well. After that we recorded my Fugue. I was happy that I did it and finish it and also I focus hard.

Everyday I practised March for half hour and the tricky bit was not to go too fast and the good bit was the I kept in rhythm.

Target: To keep learning march to add to my learing repertoire and range of music styles that I can play. To do this by listen to other style of music.

Week beginning 2 Dec 2013

On Tuesday at Knightsfield MWS  Music lesson I practise on the second phrase until the middle that I found hard. I kept practising the tricky bit in the middle. So after that I did the right a few time till I was confident and then I did the left hand for a few times till I was confident and then I did it with both of my hand for a few time the first time. I did make some mistake but the other try I nearly got it perfect.

On Wednesday in MWS Music lesson Miss Harris told us to continue on practising and at three o'clock we are going to watch a presentation . So I was practising and Miss Harris came in and see how I was doing on my music piece. So I showed her all the way through and she said well done. you kept in rhythm and that you need to work on the fist line middle because that where you are stopping. So I kept practising the tricky bit. So at three o'clock we had to go into the other room and watch the presentation. In my class this girl called Debby gave us a presentation on how to make and use cubase.

Every day I have been practising my March and the tricky bit was the middle on the first line and the good bit was that that I didn't go too fast and that I went slower. The middle bit on the first line of the music piece I improved a bit.

Target: To practise the tricky bit over again and again to know it well that I find hard to play.

Week beginning 9 Dec 2013

On Monday in MWS Music lesson I went onto my blog and update my blog. Then I started a presentation on about Music Industry.

On Wednesday in MWS Music lesson I practise the March piece. I did the both phrase on the first line over and over again and also I could do the tricky bit on the first line on the middle.

After school I went to my my extra piano lesson and me and my piano teacher did the the second phrase to the third phrase at the beginning. My piano teacher help me where the notes is and throughout it and we went slow.

The tricky bit was the second phrase because it was hard. I improved the tricky bit on the first line of the piece in the middle.

Target: To know where the notes are on a piano keyboard and to practise the middle tricky bit. To do this by learning where the notes are on the keyboard and practise the tricky middle bit on first phase till I know it.

Week Beginning 6th January 2014

On Tuesday I went to MWS Music lesson and Miss Harris gave me my assessment and Feedback on Unit 5: Introducing Music Performance, Learning Aim A. I and Mrs Ryan went back to my school and went on the computer do do one of task on pass criteria. That was to go onto word document to say what I was able to do regards to my instrument before I started this module and I upload it onto my blog on the top of the page.

On Wednesday in MWS Music lesson I stayed at Knightsfield to practise my Fugue and I kept in rhythm and timing. After I practised a few more I recored my beginning on Fugue music piece bar 1 to 8. Then I upload it onto my blog.

Review
I was happy that I recored it and that I improved. My music piece was a bit accurate.

After school I went to my extra piano lesson. I showed my piano teacher my pass criteria task and one of them was that my piano teacher has to write a report for me based on key term progression since last september. Then she photocopied my handbook key words to help her to write a report on me and the pass criteria to help her to know what I have to do before the 30th January. After that she helped me do the middle bit on the music piece March with my right hand so the first time she helped me how do it and then I did it a few times. Then we recored my right hand on March the music piece in the middle bar 9 to 20 and then we recored again and it was improved.

Review

The first recording was alright and I was a bit happy because I made some mistake. The technique I used was rhythm and timing and counting beat per minutes and I was a bit happy I used it a bit well because some of the tempo I went was fast. My interpretation March music piece was really a bit accurate because I made some mistake.
The second recording I was happy and proud that I didn't made lots of mistake and that I have improved. The technique I used was accuracy of pitch, expression and use of dynamics and counting the beasts per minutes. I was confident and happy that I used it well. My interpretation for the right hand in the middle of March music piece was accurate because I didn't make lots of mistake and it improved a lot.

Target: To keep practising March each day so that I can put it together and know it well. To do this by practising March everyday and not some of he day so that put it together.

  1. Excellent blog Nash, well done.
    1. Go through each sentence slowly, and make sure each sentence makes sense. Don't have too many 'ands'... finish your sentence with a full stop and then start again with a new sentence.
    2. Look at other key vocabulary - what are you going to focus on next, and what can you write about? Ask me if you don't understand the word.

  2. Good, well done.
Literacy focus: Please only write one blog per week. This weekly blog should explain what you have done throughout the whole week in your piano lessons and in your MWS lessons.
Skill focus: To show what you have accomplished so far, embed your Fugue Draft 1 into your blog.

  3. I alreday put my Fugue draft 1 from soundcloud onto my blog and that I did one blog per week.

  4. Nash, you have made a great start to your blog and practice. However, it would be even better if you could explain why you found things hard and not just saying you found it a bit tricky because it was hard ... What was so hard about it? Were the notes too close together on the keyboard? Did you do any of your warm up exercises first? etc. Well done for using the strategies we developed for keeping to the tempo.
